Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association (HKADSA) was established in Hong Kong SAR in May, 2023. The Association aims to support, promote and organize audio description research and practice related to the Hong Kong context; help foster greater exchange and interaction between audio description-concerned parties in the academia, public and private sectors, in HKSAR, mainland China, Taiwan, and international institutions; encourage and facilitate the exchange of ideas and dissemination of information among local audio describers, translators, interpreters, broadcasters, and interested parties on recent research developments in audio description studies; provide advice and services with regard to audio description for government and non-government organizations; promote publications and consultancy work which are in line with the above aims.
香港口述影像研究會（HKADSA）於2023年5月在香港特別行政區正式成立。研究會立足香港，旨在支持、推廣和組織圍繞口述影像的研究及服務。他們與香港、中國大陸、台灣和世界各地的大學及機構合作，促進各地區口述影像的交流與互動。研究會鼓勵更多專業人士，例如口述影像員、筆譯員、口譯員和廣播影視從業者等交流和普及口述影像的最新研究和發展。從而，為政府及非政府組織提供與口述影像相關的建議和服務，並推廣與以上理念相符的出版物和咨詢工作。

2023年8月13日，“昆曲無障礙系列”之一“昆曲口述影像理論與實踐”會議在江蘇省昆山市巴城鎮順利召開。此次會議由上海外國語大學英語學院主辦，香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系、上海市光影之聲無障礙影視發展中心、上海譯邇信息科技有限公司、隱堂工作室、楊守松工作室和香港口述影像研究會共同協辦。 本次會議圍繞“昆曲無障礙”領域中，一個重要的組成部分——“昆曲口述影像”展開探討。會議匯聚了口述影像的研究學者，口述影像服務的實踐者和昆曲表演藝術家。大家踴躍分享自己對於口述影像的研究成果和實踐經驗，表達了對于推廣“昆曲無障礙”尤其是“昆曲口述影像”的決心和願景。昆曲表演藝術家亦十分支持昆曲口述影像的相關項目，希望可以讓更多人認識和欣賞非物質文化遺產——昆曲的文化積澱與藝術表達。會議由上海外國語大學英語學院肖维青教授主持。
上海市光影之聲無障礙影視發展中心負責人韓穎老師首先發言，她分享了自己因病失明，因失明而創業的勵志故事。她提到視障人士最希望就是過普通人的生活，在舞臺藝術欣賞上，明眼人能感受到什麼，他們也希望感受得到。並且不應只關注視障人士的需要，同時也要照顧聽障人士的需要，追求視聽一體的無障礙藝術。韓老師分享了大多數人對於視障人士的理解誤區。她説到，先天性視障人士對視覺主導的元素也是有認知的，例如他們對“越來越光”的理解是空間變得越來越大，越來越高。“一束光打進來”就好像有一根棍子戳進來。除了光線，先天性視障人士對顏色也是有他們的解讀。韓穎老師曾問過一名先天性視障人士最喜歡什麼顏色，她回答粉紅色，因為那是她兒子的臉摸上去的感覺。由此可見，視障人士和明眼人的世界大同小異，只是大家用不同的方法去體驗生活。韓穎老師最後提到視障人士無法看到光，所以特別渴望能感受到光，而口述影像就是視障人士感受光的一個媒介。
原上海開放大學殘疾人教育學院院長于江老師專門談到口述影像中戲曲專有名詞的處理手法，給與會者帶來很大啓發。
上海譯邇信息科技有限公司總經理韓冬雪老師表示，她創業的目的是為了推動更多的影視從業人員參與到口述影像的製作過程中，製作影視作品時要將視障人士對口述影像的需要考慮其中。
上海譯邇信息科技有限公司高級顧問、口述影像撰稿人馬衛導演總結了中國口述影像行業發展的不足之處，並提出發展目標。會後，馬衛導演發表了題爲《來自昆曲小鎮的無障礙之聲》的感想。“坐落在江蘇昆山的昆曲小鎮巴城，古鎮小院牆垣間不時可見昆曲的痕跡，曲徑通幽處隱約流淌着昆曲的腔調。昆曲小鎮昨天迎來了一批特殊的客人，他們不是前來品嘗著名的陽澄湖大閘蟹，而是為昆曲的無障礙而來、而坐、而談。來自香港、上海外國語大學、上海無障礙電影（口述影像）領域的業內人士與研究學者，江蘇省昆曲界資深人士，以及來自國内外大學的博士生們，圍繞口述影像實踐、口述影像評估標準以及昆曲/戲劇口述影像等問題展開討論，内容涉及面廣，觀點很有啟發性。每一位與會者都收穫頗豐，願意為昆曲的口述影像無障礙探索提供幫助。”
來自香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系的鄢秀教授、周曉彤博士生以及羅康特博士（北京師範大學-香港浸會大學聯合國際學院助理教授）在會議上向與會嘉賓介紹了口述影像在香港的發展和實踐，著重提到香港粵劇口述影像的發展、培訓與成果，並分享了口述影像的评估标准，希望以香港口述影像的例子推動昆曲口述影像的發展。
西班牙巴塞羅那自治大學博士生、上海外國語大學訪問學者劉禹辰，概括了口述影像在西班牙的發展，為發展昆曲口述影像提供了藉鑒和參考。 英國倫敦大學學院博士生、上海外國語大學訪問學者賈輝煌，介紹了國外對殘疾藝人跟殘疾相關機構的支持項目，拓展了大家的眼界。
雲南大學碩士生、上海市光影之聲無障礙影視發展中心現場口述影像志願者袁哲，闡述了提供現場口述影像的難處，更讓大家體會到發展昆曲口述影像的必要性。
上海市光影之聲無障礙影視發展中心口述影像撰稿人孫科彌，分享了自己作為一名殘疾人士，能就自己的興趣服務人群的故事，她對自己能為社會做出貢獻而感到光榮。
江蘇省演藝集團黨委委員、副總裁，昆山籍著名昆曲表演藝術家李鴻良，為各行各業在口述影像的努力而感動，希望以後可以利用自己在昆曲上的專業，為口述影像出一份力。
最後，文化史家、中國民協香港分會主席、集古學社社長鄭培凱教授強調了昆曲的文化價值，倡導支持昆曲口述影像。他說到，“在香港，粵劇的口述影像無障礙化已經在政府的支持下十分普及，深受戲迷的歡迎，也吸引了一批年輕人的喜愛。或許，昆曲也會有這一天，它的傳播流行有新理念新元素包装，這就是可能惠及每一个有需要之人的無障礙。”
楊守松昆曲工作室精心安排了昆曲體驗活動，介紹了昆曲的譜子、音調、唱腔等知識，教大家學習如何演繹昆曲。最後，本次“昆曲口述影像理論與實踐”會議在《遊園驚夢》大合唱環節中圓滿落下帷幕。

2023年11月14日，香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系邀請香港失明人協進會和香港口述影像研究會共同給學生志願者開展培訓。在培訓中，同學們不僅強化了口述影像技能，更是學習和訓練了如何更好地為視障人士提供幫助。
本次工作坊主要圍繞如下幾個方面展開培訓：
一、理解視障人士的需求：瞭解視障人士的特殊需求是開展交流與培訓的基礎。視障人士的能力和需求因人而異，有些人可能完全失明，而有些人可能有一定的殘餘視力。瞭解他們的溝通方式、使用輔助工具和技術，以及對於資訊獲取和參與活動的特殊需求是至關重要的。
二、瞭解無障礙環境：環境無障礙，能為視障人士提供便利。這包括提供無障礙的交通和導航指引，如地面引導線、盲道等；提供無障礙的設施和設備，如無障礙廁所、輔助聽覺設備等；以及提供易於觸摸和操作的材料和工具。
三、學習使用輔助技術和工具：利用現代科技和輔助工具來支持視障人士的交流。這包括使用螢幕閱讀器和螢幕放大器來説明視障人士獲取和閱讀電子文檔；提供盲文和觸覺圖形以進行資訊傳達；使用口述影像和口述說明來解釋視覺內容等。
四、傾聽和尊重：在交流中，傾聽和尊重視障人士的意見和回饋至關重要。他們可能有獨特的觀點和需求，因此確保給予他們平等參與和表達意見的機會。同時，尊重他們的個人空間和隱私，避免對他們的能力和經驗做出不必要的假設。
五、促進互動和合作：鼓勵視障人士與其他參與者進行互動和合作。通過小組討論、合作項目和互助學習，促進互相理解和共同成長。這有助於打破溝通障礙，促進交流和培訓的有效性。
這樣的培訓合作對於香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系的學生志願者來說具有重要意義。
首先，口述影像技能的得到了強化。通過與香港失明人協進會和香港口述影像研究會的合作培訓，學生志願者能夠系統學習和提高口述影像技能。他們將學習如何準確、清晰地描述視覺媒體內容，以滿足視障人士對於電影、電視節目、戲劇等的需求，尤其是在展覽導賞過程中為視障人士提供高品質的口述影像服務。
其次，增進了對視障人士需求的瞭解。通過與視障人士組織的合作，學生志願者將更深入地瞭解視障人士的需求和挑戰。他們將學習如何與視障人士合作，理解他們在獲取資訊和參與文化活動方面所面臨的困難，從而更好地滿足他們的需求。
再次，提高了服務意識和能力。通過與視障人士組織合作的培訓，學生志願者將培養出更強的服務意識和能力。他們將學習如何傾聽和溝通，如何關注視障人士的個體差異和需求，以提供更加個性化和有針對性的口述影像服務。
最後，推動了社會參與和包容性。這種合作培訓不僅有利於學生志願者個人技能的提升，也有助於推動社會的參與和包容性發展。學生志願者將成為促進視障人士文化參與的重要力量，通過口述影像服務為他們打開資訊獲取和文化享受的大門。
The Indra and Harry Banga Gallery Audio Description Tour and Touch Tour was successfully held on 18 November 2023 for the exhibition, The Grand Gathering of the Century: Zodiac Heads from the Yuanmingyuan and Important Treasures (Click HERE for the exhibition). 13 people who are visually impaired along with their family participated in the event under the help of student volunteers.
The event is co-organised by the Department of Linguistics and Translation, the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery, the Hong Kong Blind Union, and the Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association with the aims of promoting inclusive services for people who are visually impaired and enhancing students' skills in language, audio description (AD), and translation.
The event consisted of two parts. First, a student docent provided AD services for the participants explaining the exhibits and describing the visual elements of the exhibition for example, highlighting the East-meets-West architectural feature of Haiyantang (Hall of the Clam Seas) of the Yuanmingyuan, and the mechanical system of the Great Fountain water clock. After that, participants had a chance to touch the replicas of some of the bronze heads along with AD explanations provided by the student volunteers. Before the event, the student volunteers had received training from the Hong Kong Blind Union, and the Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association on how to interact with people who are visually impaired and how to audio describe for art galleries.
Majority of the participants responded positively about the event. In the participant satisfaction survey, more than 90% of the participants are satisfied about the arrangement and found the event useful in enhancing their understanding on cultural heritage and the cultural exchange between the East and the West.
The "Preview Screening and Audio Description Project Launch of The Film Ani Choying Drolma: Mission Impossible” took place on 14 December 2023, at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, City University of Hong Kong. The event was co-organized by the film's creative team and the Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association, with the aim of promoting inclusive services for people who are visually impaired, raising the public's awareness on this social group, and enhancing students' language, translation, and audio description skills.
The event consisted of two parts. The first part was the launch of the Audio Description Project for the documentary film Ani Choying Drolma: Mission Impossible. The Directors of the film, LIN Fen and BAI Shan, and the President of the Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association, YAN Xiu, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony and delivered the opening remarks to officially kick off the event. The film was then shown to the audience before the movie release. The Audio Description Project team members also discussed how to describe the visual elements in the film to enhance the cinematic experience of the visually impaired audience.
The interactive session provided an opportunity to communicate directly with the creative team to learn more about the stories behind the film. Professor CHENG Pei-Kai recollected the reminiscence with the Producer of the film, the late Professor SITU Zhaodun from the Beijing Film Academy. The creative team also shared their memories with Professor SITU and expressed their greatest regret and heartfelt gratitude towards Professor SITU. Professor LI Chao spoke highly of the film regarding it as "the most beloved documentary film he has seen in the recent years." One audience commented that she saw "boundlessness" in the film.
Several visually impaired audiences also participated in the event. They expressed their anticipation towards the audio description version of the film and mentioned that they would be thrilled to pay to watch it in the cinemas. In Hong Kong, audio descriptions are rarely provided in documentary films, but mostly in narrative films. The involvement of the creative team in the upcoming audio description production will largely maintain the authenticity of the film and convey the directors’ intended meaning.
「紀錄電影《次第花開》預先放映會暨口述影像項目啓動會」2023年12月14日在香港城市大學邵逸夫創意媒體中心舉行。是次活動由電影主創團隊和香港口述影像研究會共同主辦，旨在促進為視障人士提供包容性服務，提高社會對這一社會群體的關注，並提升學生的語言、翻譯和口述影像技能。
本次活動由兩個部分組成。首先舉辦紀錄電影《次第花開》口述影像項目啓動會。該片導演林芬、白衫以及香港口述影像研究會會長鄢秀上臺剪綵並發言。之後舉辦的預先放映會，讓與會來賓有機會提前欣賞這部電影。口述影像項目團隊成員在現場討論了關於這部電影的口述影像版本製作的想法，例如如何更好地描述電影畫面中的視覺元素，從而增進視障觀眾的觀影體驗。
交流環節，更是提供了與電影主創團隊直接交流的機會，瞭解到更多電影背後的故事。鄭培凱教授回憶起和該片監製、已故北京電影學院教授司徒兆敦老師的趣事，讓主創團隊感概萬千。李超教授評價，「這是近年來他看到的最喜歡的紀錄電影」。有觀衆評價，她在電影中看到了「無界」的境界。
本次活動吸引了視障觀眾的參與，他們也表達了自己對於這部影片口述影像版本的期待，届時一定會自己掏錢去電影院欣賞。因爲在香港上映的口述影像電影基本上是故事片，鮮少能欣賞到紀錄片電影的口述影像版本。此次電影的主創團隊能夠全程參與到口述影像的製作中，能夠最大程度地保持電影的原汁原味，輸出導演想表達的立意。
關於紀錄電影《次第花開》林芬、白杉執導的《次第花開》在第39屆華沙國際電影節獲得了最佳亞太電影評審團大獎，以及紀錄片競賽單元最受觀眾歡迎獎。本片由兩位女性導演林芬和白杉聯合執導。著名紀錄片導演周兵博士，已故北京電影學院教授司徒兆敦老師任監製，奧斯卡紀錄片獲獎者楊紫燁女士任顧問，司徒兆敦老師同時擔任了該片的剪輯指導。該片是入選該國際A類電影節的唯一香港影片。
這部時長96分鐘的影片摄制了七年多的時間，足跡遍布8個國家和地區，影片主創由海峽兩岸暨香港的影視工作者共同組成。
影片講述了一位擁有天籟梵音的尼泊爾女尼，她發願建立女童學校和醫院的故事，關於愛、勇氣和寬恕。琼英卓瑪出生在尼泊爾一個貧困家庭，年幼時遭受父親家暴，性格叛逆。後來她無法忍受，青春年華時剃度出家。在加德滿都的寺廟裡，她學會了唱歌，她空靈的歌聲引領她走向世界音樂舞台。她在全世界不知疲倦地巡演，用演唱會所得的錢款創辦了公益醫院和度母女童學校。學校從最初的七八個學生，到現在已有八十多個。曾經遭遇不幸的尼泊爾女孩在這裡學習各類知識，逐漸找到了生命的希望和對未來的憧憬。
關於 「口述影像」口述影像通過口語描述將影像信息轉換成口頭文字符號，協助視障人士克服生活、學習和工作環境中的各種影像障礙。簡單來說，口述影像就是把「看見」的內容「說」出來。口述影像在一些國家和地區已經發展了30多年，然而相比之下，香港在10多年前才開始意識到視障人士對於口述影像的需求。此外，香港高校對於口述影像相關課程的開設非常有限。
香港城市大學是華語地區極少數將口述影像融入課堂教學的高校之一。近年來，香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系的鄢秀教授在她的口譯課堂中增設了口述影像培訓的內容，旨在讓學生有機會及早接觸這一新興領域，並提高他們關心社會特殊需要人士的意識。鄢教授建立了一個由視障人士與健視人士共同組成的研究團隊，制定了一套基於口述影像和口譯共同特點的評估標準。他們還參與學生的課堂作業評估，從使用者的角度為學生的口述影像作品提供反饋。為了增加學生的口述影像實踐機會，鄢教授成立了口述影像俱樂部。近兩年來，他們與國內外大學和機構合作，開展工作坊和講座，並為視障訪客提供口述影像服務，讓學生將課堂中學習到的口述影像技巧真正應用於實踐服務中。透過課堂教學和工作坊，師生對於口述影像的概況以及其服務流程有了基本了解。
Prof. YAN Xiu, Jackie, president of Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association (HKADSA), visited the University of Macau on 19 March 2024 to deliver a lecture on “Audio Description Training and Assessment: Perceptions and Approaches” aiming at promoting academic collaboration, exchanging ideas, and shedding light on the training and assessment methods used in audio description. Prof. YAN shared her expertise and insights with the faculty members and students thanks to the effort of the facilitator, Prof. LI Defeng, the Associate Dean of FAH (Faculty of Arts and Humanities) and Director of Centre for Studies of Translation, Interpreting and Cognition (CSTIC) at the University of Macau.
Prof. YAN is a renowned scholar in the field of audio description, with extensive experience in research, teaching, and practical applications. Her work has contributed significantly to the advancement of audio description techniques and accessibility for the people who are visually impaired.
Her lecture, titled "Audio Description Training and Assessment: Perceptions and Approaches", explored the current landscape of audio description practices and the methodologies employed in training and assessing audio describers, followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience encouraging further discussions and offering additional insights into audio description training and assessment.
Prof. YAN's visit to the University of Macau and her lecture proved to be highly insightful and beneficial to the university community. Her expertise and comprehensive understanding of audio description techniques and practices provided valuable insights into training and assessing audio describers. The visit served as a catalyst for academic collaboration and inspired students and researchers to further explore the field of audio description. Prof. LI extended his sincere gratitude to Prof. YAN for sharing her knowledge and contributing to the enhancement of accessibility and inclusion in media for individuals with visual impairments.
2024年7月24日，「絲織繁華：從中國到歐洲之路」口述影像無障礙導賞團在香港城市大學舉行。是次活動由香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系、香港城市大學般哥展覽館、香港口述影像研究會和香港失明人協進會共同主辦，旨在促進为视障人士提供包容性服务，并提升学生的语言、翻译和口述影像技能。該活動吸引了包括視障人士與志願者在内的近30位嘉賓。這項活動得益於香港特區政府的大學教育資助委員會和香港城市大學的研究項目支持。

口述影像無障礙導賞活動源于香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系近幾年持續開展的口述影像教學。香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系的鄢秀教授在口譯課堂中增設了口述影像培訓模塊。她與團隊制定了一套基於口述影像和口譯共同特點的評估標準。不僅如此，鄢教授也邀請了視障觀眾參與評估，從使用者的角度為學生的口述影像作品提供反饋。她將研究與實踐結合起來，在國際期刊和會議上發表了一系列論文。

香港城市大學般哥展覽館「絲織繁華：從中國到歐洲之路」展覽的精彩呈現為本次活動提供了契機。本次活動還得到了香港口述影像研究會和香港失明人協進會的大力支持。這是立足於香港的口述影像無障礙服務在展覽館導賞實踐中的一次本土化探索，是連接高校口述影像人才培育和向社會輸送高質素口述影像人才的橋梁，是對口述影像服務新模式的一次開拓。
口述影像是一項協助視障人士克服生活、學習和工作環境中的各種影像障礙的服務。簡單來説，口述影像就是通過口語描述，把“看見”的“說”出來。口述影像服務已經發展了30多年，香港在10多年前才開始關注到視障群體的這一需求。另外，在香港，很少有高校開設口述影像的相關課程。當前的香港的口述影像服務比較多是集中于口述影視作品，態化地在展覽中常提供口述影像服務是比較少見的。
香港城市大學般哥展覽館的總監陳麗碧博士特別重視和支持本次無障礙導賞活動。她不但提供了此次展覽的資料，還親自審閲導賞解説稿，提出許多專業且寶貴的意見，確保了本次活動能向視障來賓提供準確、優質的無障礙導賞體驗。

本次口述影像導賞團隊在鄢秀教授的引領下，由香港城市大學翻譯及語言學系的博士生周曉彤、林蘇、吳桓球、王淑婷和張雅涵共同完成。口述影像員周曉彤還是一位經驗豐富的多語種口譯員和導賞員，目前正在從事口述影像的相關研究。她從展覽入口處開始，一邊引著來賓深入展覽，一邊生動地講解。導賞團的嘉賓在志願者的陪伴下，認真地聽著，時而開懷大笑，時而提出問題。是次展覽雲集來自中國、印度、法國及意大利的各類珍惜絲綢文物，剖析其藝術、貿易、時尚與技術上的發展。展覽聚焦絲織展品由中國到歐洲去而復返之路，呈現此奢華獨特材質如何成爲國際交流的媒介。通過口述影像無障礙導賞，通達了視障人士的藝術享受，實現了藝術無障礙。
本次口述影像無障礙導賞團活動得到了來賓的積極反饋。香港失明人協進會的張曉善女士表示這次活動是一次剋服了視覺障礙的藝術之旅，這是一次關於向視障人士提供無障礙服務有益的探索，相信只要有更多的社會力量積極參與到口述影像發展中，就能更好地為視障人士提供服務，讓他們能夠更好地融入社會。雖然本次活動已經結束，但香港口述影像藝術無障礙導賞的探索已揚帆起航。大家携手，把香港建設成更具包容性的國際大都會。
The 5th Hong Kong Regional Final of the 10th Cross-Strait Interpreting Competition (Putonghua/English) was successfully held by the Department of Linguistics and Translation (LT), City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) on 12 April 2025. It was co-organized by CityUHK, Xiamen University, and the Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association (HKADSA). Contestants from 6 universities in Hong Kong participated in the contest. The panel of adjudicators consisted of interpreter training experts and seasoned practitioners. The first prizes were awarded to 4 students from CityUHK, ChineseU, and BaptistU, who will continue to compete in the Grand Final of the 10th Cross-strait Interpreting Competition in May. This event has attracted 327 participants (onsite and online).
The Department of LT has hosted the Competition for the 5th time since 2014. It has become an important platform for deepening international academic exchanges between universities and showcasing students’ interpreting talents.
This year’s contest, themed “Digital Society,” incorporated multiple artificial intelligence (AI) elements, such as real-time subtitling and livestreaming, to enhance convenience for adjudicators and audience. Notably, the organizing team consisted of both sighted and visually impaired people. The event also provided audio description (AD) services: A team of volunteer audio describers rendered contest visuals into vivid verbal narratives, delivering socially meaningful linguistic assistance to visually impaired people. CityUHK is one of the few universities in the Chinese-speaking region offering AD training in the interpreting programs. The contest provided students with hands-on experience in delivering AD services, allowing them to apply to practice what they have learned in class.
The CityUHK contestants, LIU Xindi, LIANG Yiwen, and ZHANG Xiaozhu, are from the MALS program, Dept of LT. They won the first and second prizes. Before the contest, seven training sessions were organized in the Simultaneous Lab by the Interpreting Workshop Led by Prof Jackie Xiu Yan. The trainers of the pre-contest sessions were CHOW Amanda Hiu Tung and LIU Guijiao. The event was supported by a series of research grants: GRF #1160962, DON_RMG #9229103, DON_RMG #9229125, SIRG #7020037, the Principal Investigator is Prof Jackie Xiu Yan, who is also Chair of the Organizing Committee.
Prof Caesar Lun, Leader of the MALS Program, said that he saw seamless collaboration across roles among volunteers and helpers, this is a team of exceptional talent. Such team spirit of dedication to a shared goal lays the foundation for success. Prof Niels Schiller, Head of the Department, also sent his encouragement to the contestants.

An Audio Description (AD) Accessible Guided Tour was organised in a collaborative effort with the Department of Linguistics and Translation and the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) as well as Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association (HKADSA) on September 13, 2025. The guided tour intended to provide an inclusive art experience of the gallery's current exhibition titled "Central African Art Invocation of an Unseen World", allowing visually impaired guests to explore the stories and traditions behind Central African art through carefully crafted audio descriptions that focused on appearance and historical background of the exhibits delivered by Sindia Chow, the presenter and the member of the department's AD research project. Over 50 people attended the event, joining a vibrant group of members from the Hong Kong Blind Union and student volunteers from CityUHK.
This event was widely appreciated by attendees. Merrick, a visually impaired participant, described the experience as a perfect blend of information and entertainment comparing to other guided tours of exhibitions. This positive sentiment was echoed by Tommy, the team leader of the Hong Kong Blind Union, who extended his gratitude to the organisers for their thoughtful and well-executed event as well as the warm student volunteers. Other participants also shared their appreciation, noting that the guided tour made them feel genuinely cared for and included in the society and they expressed a strong desire that more events like this should be organised in the future.
Professor of the Department of Linguistics and Translation Jackie Yan, as the project leader and the President of HKADSA, stated that Hong Kong is a cultural and artistic hub for exchange between China and the rest of the world. The audio description may serve as a bridge for the visually impaired to appreciate art and culture. This event is both an artistic journey that overcomes visual barriers and an exploration of providing caring services for the people in need. She believes that with greater social participation in the development of AD, the city could better help visually impaired people integrate into society.

The stage play in Cantonese, “Tea-Horse Road · Ballad of Fallen Dragon”, with audio description (AD) was successfully shown on 18 July 2025 providing AD service for more than 30 people with visual impairment. CityUHK’s Department of Linguistics and Translation (LT) co-organised the event with the Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association (HKADSA), Hong Kong Blind Union, and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Hong Kong Member Association Ltd (HKL&A). The event was held to promote inclusive services for people who are visually impaired and to enhance students’ language and AD skills.
Professor Jackie YAN Xiu, from LT, who is also the President of HKADSA, led the AD team and recruited people with visual impairment to edit the AD script from the start. The AD team consists of audio describers, AD writers, and editors. The members are as follows (ordered alphabetically): CHEN Xia, CHOI Lok Sze, CHOW Amanda Hiu Tung, CHOW Sin Nga, HUANG Lei, LIANG Yiwen, LIN Su, STEVENSON Huien Sarah, WANG Kailun, and WANG Shuting. The audio describers narrated the visual elements of the stage play including gestures, facial expressions, costumes of the performers, as well as the setting during the silent interval of the show to achieve accessibility to the arts.
Professor Yan combined teaching with research. With her research team, she incorporated an AD training module into her interpreting class, developed the AD evaluation criteria, and published extensively in international journals and conferences with the aim to cultivate AD talents at tertiary education and offer high-quality AD services for the public.
2025年4月14日，香港口述影像研究會創會主席鄢秀教授應邀前往北師香港浸會大學人文社科學院語言文化系應用翻譯學專業參加視聽翻譯學生專案成果分享會並發表演講。本次活動匯聚粵港翻譯學界專家與師生代表，共同見證北師香港浸會大學應用翻譯專業學生在視聽翻譯及無障礙語言服務領域的創新實踐。
活動在主持人香港口述影像研究會國際關係主任、北師香港浸會大學應用翻譯專業助理教授羅康特博士的歡迎辭中拉開帷幕。北師香港浸會大學人文社科學院副院長（教學）John Corbett教授和語言文化系副系主任、應用翻譯專業課程主任萬騰龍博士依次發表致辭。鄢秀教授和John Corbett教授、萬騰龍博士共同為學生代表頒發證書，並合影留念。
鄢秀教授帶來主題演講《翻譯研究中的口述影像：研究、教學與實踐》。她從口述影像的定義出發，系統闡述其與翻譯學科的聯繫，並結合香港口述影像行業發展史，分析人工智慧技術浪潮為口述影像發展帶來的機遇與挑戰。"口述影像不僅是技術問題，更是社會公義的體現，"鄢教授指出，"如何讓視障群體'看見'電影，也是翻譯研究的重要課題。"
香港口述影像研究會秘書長、香港城市大學博士生周曉彤以《殘奧運動員電影英語與粵語口述影像的對比研究》為題，通過對兩部殘奧題材電影的口述影像臺本進行對比分析，探討了如何通過精確措辭減少對殘障人士的刻板印象。"語言的選擇直接影響社會認知，"周曉彤女士分享道，"我們在研究中發現，粵語口述影像更注重情感表達，而英語版本則強調資訊的客觀準確。"
香港口述影像研究會司庫、香港城市大學博士生林蘇則聚焦公共政策，分享《英國與中國香港口述影像公共政策的對比研究》。她通過詳盡的圖表展示兩地政策差異，指出英國在立法保障方面的先行優勢，以及中國香港近年來在政府推動下的快速發展。"政策支持是行業可持續發展的關鍵，"林蘇女士總結道，"中國香港的後發優勢正在顯現。"
由北師香港浸會大學應用翻譯專業學生組成的八個小組依次登臺展示其視聽翻譯專案成果。主題涵蓋口述影像、聽障字幕、創意字幕、無障礙語言服務教育等。鄢秀教授在點評環節對學生們的表現給予高度評價："你們的選題展現了對社會問題的敏銳洞察，方法論清晰，結論具有創新性。"她同時建議學生在今後研究中加強資訊溯源，提升學術嚴謹性。“你們是推動社會發展的新興力量，"鄢教授勉勵道，"希望你們繼續用語言的力量推動社會進步，為無障礙語言服務事業注入青春活力。"

Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association (HKADSA) has invited Ms Dongxue HAN, founder and CEO of Shanghai Yi’er Information Technology Company, to lead two audio description (AD) training sessions on 2 April 2025 and 7 April 2025 via Tencent Meeting. Ms HAN introduced techniques in providing AD services for live settings. After Ms HAN’s lecture, the 40 participants wrote and delivered their AD scripts, and received constructive feedback from Ms HAN.
Ms HAN founded Shanghai Yier Information Technology Co., Ltd., and produced China’s first fully accessible film in 2020, featuring audio description, closed captions, and sign language interpretation, as well as the nation’s first accessible commercial advertisement. She also organized China’s inaugural International Accessible Film Forum in 2021 and pioneered professional training programs covering audio-visual, physical, and intellectual accessibility. By March 2025, as an accessibility producer and consultant, Han has overseen over 300 accessible adaptations across films, TV series, animations, and documentaries.
